James Torme – A Very Torme Christmas
In an evening that is filled with swinging, sophisticated versions of America’s favorite holiday songs (and much more), the second-gen jazz star (yes he’s the son of three-time Grammy winner and jazz legend Mel Tormé) interprets melody and lyrics with stunning versatility, often diving into rhythmic and melodic mashups with a freedom reminiscent of Anita O’Day or Ella Fitzgerald.
Described by the media as ‘A bridge between tradition and revolution’, ‘Timeless old school charm meets new school swagger’ and ‘One of the most extraordinary singers of a generation’, Tormé’s sublime vocal skills, ready wit and magnetic stage presence have music fans everywhere calling him one of the new greats. Much like his father and his peers, Tormé is much more than a singer. He is a fully-fledged entertainer.
The full evening program concludes with James telling the story of, and performing, his father and Bob Wells’ legendary ‘The Christmas Song’ (Chestnuts Roasting on An Open Fire) – a song both written for and gifted to Nat ‘King Cole’ on the same afternoon. The audience is swept up in a wave of nostalgic emotions.
